Grad Protest 11/29/17

DAILY WILDCAT

All the best clips from my time as a reporter at the DW, when I covered all things University of Arizona.

May 03, 2017

Tucson, AZ is only a few hours from the Mexican border, making issues like immigration and DACA very real for the families and students who live here.

This article was written for the 100 Days of Trump special edition, and spoke about what it was like to be a student under the DACA program.

October 11, 2017

Christiana Duarte, a recent graduate of the University of Arizona, lost her life in the tragic Las Vegas shooting. Hundreds of students from the UA community came to honor her at a memorial service, where close friends spoke and remembered who she was.

September 21, 2016

The article that started it all.

Brother Dean, a hate preacher, assaulted a student and was banned from campus for a year. I did breaking news coverage of the event, resulting in the highest readership of a story in Daily Wildcat history.

This was my first story at the Daily Wildcat.

March 30, 2018

Court case coverage of Craig Carter, a former track and field coach who was on the stand for committing aggravated assault and aggravated assault with a weapon against former student-athlete, Baillie Gibson. He was found guilty of both charges.

Former Honors College Dean Patricia MacCorquodale sued the University of Arizona over the Equal Pay Act after the interim and official deans who replaced her made $100,000 and $70,000 more respectively.

August 21, 2018

Students who didn't have permanent housing in the dorms were set up in study rooms and lived with resident assistants. While some students were grateful for the arrangement, others were less than pleased.

September 25, 2018

UA alumna Andrea Constand was one of 60 women who was allegedly assaulted by Bill Cosby. She released a statement when Cosby was sentenced to 3 to 10 years in prison.

November 29, 2017

In response to the Republican House tax plan, a group of graduate students gathered in front of Old Main  to protest, joining thousands of grad students across the country who participated in walkouts and rallies. At the University of Arizona, grad students are important helpers as research and teaching assistants.

August 22, 2017

While Trump held his controversial rally in Phoenix, Tucson residents organized a remote protest in front of Tucson City Hall. I did extensive live coverage (see right) on Twitter and Facebook during this event, and talked with a lot of Tucsonans about current political issues.

This is the third rally/protest/march that I have covered. I did live tweeting at all of them.

April 28, 2017

In his first invited visit to the University of Arizona, Gov. Doug Ducey spoke about his experience as a businessman and entrepreneur to an Eller class. Afterwards, I got to interview him about his new plan to give money to the three public universities in Arizona.

April 08, 2017

After President Ann Weaver Hart stepped down, the University of Arizona searched for and found our current president- Dr. Robert Robbins. I went to the Arizona Board of Regents meeting to see him sworn in, and got to interview him after.

January 21, 2018

How did the government shutdown affect students? What changes did they need to expect while deliberations were happening in Congress?

December 14, 2017

The Arizona Board of Regents held a special meeting on Wednesday, Dec. 13. Important decisions include not giving former UA President Ann Weaver Hart a $15,000 Annual Performance Incentive Agreement and President Eileen Klein's updates on her plans to get rid of obsolete fees.

November 09, 2016

One of two articles written at midnight and one in the morning after the results from the election came out. This one spoke about how Proposition 205 was not passed in Arizona, making marijuana remain illegal.

During the coverage of the election, reporters and editors in the news room collaborated with reporters on the scene at different political party's watch parties. I didn't get any sleep that night, but it was one of the more fulfilling reporting experiences.

I wrote multiple articles on marijuana as I followed Prop. 205 through the voting process.

February 27, 2017

Masturbation is a touchy subject, so a club on campus hosted a discussion about it, giving students the floor to talk about something that usually isn't talked about. Led by an expert from the Southern Arizona AIDS Foundation, facts and data were given to students along with personal stories.

This was one of the more fun articles I got to write.

April 26, 2017

The UA hosted an international hackathon-esque challenge, where students from all over the world came and competed to see who could make the best code for a self-driving car.

Not only did I get to report on the event, but I got to do live coverage where I was inside the car! It really is the technology of the future.
